History

The once little fishing village Södra Säby received its town privileges from the Scandinavian king, Eric av Pommern (Eric of Pomerania) in 1413. 143 years later, in 1549, the Danish king Kristian III builds in Landskrone, which was the name of this at that time Danish town, a fortress named the Citadel (Citadellet). Landskrone had at that time approx. 1 000 inhabitants. The citadel was supposed to protect against the Swedes.
In 1658 Landskrone was occupied by Swedish troops and its name was changed to Landskrona. The town was then supposed to be the residential town of Skåne and plans where made to build a university and an Episcopal seat, but the plans were never fulfilled. By the 18th century the town was to be even more fortified and moved a bit south, this took place. There was now about 2 000 citizens in Landskrona.
In the middle of 19th century the town got railway link and shipping industry flourished Landskrona transformed from a fortress town to an open industrial and commercial town. The collapse of Swedish shipyard industry in the 1970-ties affected also Landskrona, but after those dark years that followed, the town entered an expansive phase again, investing in commerce and tourism.
